When I was 13, I spent some time at the Springfield Stockyards. One night, I met Walt, the night watchman. Walt told me he was 135 years old. He had sharp hearing but his eyesight was a little weak. Still, if anyone tried to cause trouble, Walt would stop them. He carried a cane, which I thought he might use as a club. Despite his age, he walked just fine. That night left a lasting impression on me, and Walt’s stories and presence taught me lessons that go beyond his years.
